Course Information & Requirements
We're so excited you're here! Thank you for your interest in the OSAT Glacier Climbing Course. For the most updated course information please review our web-page
When you sign up, please keep a few things in mind:
- Check your email ASAP: If possible, register for the course with a Gmail email address. Every student is required to have a Gmail email address, since we'll be using Google Classroom for class work associated with the course. After you register, check your email for instructions on what to do between now and the start of the course. There is gear you must buy before the first event, and you will need to enroll in our online learning center in Google Classroom.
- Event Attendance: Attendance at events is 100% mandatory. Please you clear your calendar with employers, teachers and family in advance of signing up to make sure you can make it to everything. Important dates are at bottom of this page.
- Required Monthly Conditioner: Starting in January, every student is required to complete one scheduled conditioning hike per month. These conditioners are generally a half-day or longer, 6 to 10 miles, and 2,500 to 4,000 feet elevation gain. Get ready to sweat! They are fun, but not easy.
- Course Fee: The course fee of $215 covers the cost of the electronic syllabus, group gear, classroom space, and Mount Rainier climbing fees. The fee must be paid upon registering. Those who don't pay will be dropped from the course. The course fee does NOT include the cost of your individual mountaineering equipment.
- Course Gear: Proper attire and gear is important, but expensive. You can mitigate costs by renting, borrowing, or purchasing used gear, but costs can still add up. We aim to stagger the gear requirements to help break up the upfront costs. However, you should begin planning the expenses ahead of time. First gear purchases are required to attend the first seminar on January 3rd, 2026. More details regarding the specific time and gear requirements will be provided soon.
- Course Refunds: The course fee is refundable until December 31, 2025 at 11:59 pm. If you sign up for the course and decide to withdraw before that time, a refund will be made to you by check (minus a $25 processing charge).
Waitlist Information
- After the first 70 students (Is 70 accurate for 2026?) are selected, students will be put on a waitlist. Wait-listed members will be notified by email if an opening become available. You will not be charged until you become enrolled in the course.
- If you are wait-listed, keep an eye on your email. You will have 24 hours to respond and sign up once you're contacted about a spot opening.
- Waitlisted students should consider attending a Tiger Mountain Sunday Meeting
