Grandma Gatewood's Walk by Ben Montgomery

The Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail

In 1955, Emma Gatewood told her family she was going on a walk and left her small Ohio hometown with a change of clothes and less than $200.00. The next anyone heard from her, this 67 year old great-grandmother had walked 800 miles of the Appalachian Trail, but she didn't stop there, she completed the trail. Not once, not twice, but 3 times! She was the 1st person to do this.  The public attention she brought to the trail and her vocal criticism of the lousy difficult stretches led to bolstered maintenance and very likely saved the trail.

Come join us as we discuss this book and the connections we make with it.
